side-note:  
`"webpack":"^4.2"` broke `au run` [https://github.com/webpack/webpack/issues/6825](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/issues/6825)  
TL;DR until fixed always `run --watch`  
Hence the [CLI usage survey](https://discourse.aurelia.io/t/cli-usage-survey/947)

Another thing broken in webpack it seems - `<require from="*.css">` for `build --env prod` [https://github.com/webpack-contrib/extract-text-webpack-plugin/issues/763](https://github.com/webpack-contrib/extract-text-webpack-plugin/issues/763)  
workaround provided in the issue
